Overview

The goal of this project is to improve the lives of smallholder farmers by strengthening the ability of Rural Producer Organizations (RPOs) to improve their members’ access to input and output markets. It will do this by identifying specific interventions that can improve the capacity of RPO members to better access and benefit from input and output markets. In particular, we will focus on issues pertaining to member commitment through (i) enhanced leadership capacities, and (ii) improved incentive alignment through the engagement of the group in a portfolio of activities. Specifically, we seek to design and test (1) leadership mechanisms that will enable group success regardless of the specific qualities of a particular leader and (2) complementary activities that will ensure alignment of members’ incentives such that the group is successful. Success will be measured in terms of groups’ abilities to achieve better prices on input and output markets.
