Start Date: 1 January 2009 | End Date: 31 December 2010Overview
The development objective of the project is to test and improve local renewable sources of biomass based energy (Jatropha curcas and other drought resistant oil producing perennial species) for local consumption in Mali in order to:
(i) Create employment and increase income from Jatropha among farmes in Mali(ii) Provide a basis to enhance local development upstream in the value chain of oil from Jatropha curcas by contributing to a local, secure and import-independent supply of energy, (iii) Improve sequestration of carbon in Jatropha plantings and offset carbon emissions by substituting fossil sources of energy with biomass based energy from Jatropha curcas to mitigate climate change, (iv) Provide suitable genetic resources of Jatropha curcas for different climates to optimize production and to enable adaptation of the energy plantings to climate change, and (v) Suggest possible alternative species to Jatropha curcas for oil production under arid and semi-arid conditions.
