Overview

The main purposes of this project are:

  • Identify and characterize orthologs of maize SD genes in rice, and other cosexual cereals as time permits
  • Identify and map unisexual traits in related monoecious species of rice
  • Characterize mutant alleles of rice SD orthologs using existing genomic resources and zinc-finger knockout technologies
  • Extend unisexuality traits, initially to rice, with technologies applicable to other cosexual cereals
  • Train young scientists in plant biotechnology, genomics and cereal transformation
