			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nitrification, a key process in the global nitrogen cycle that generates nitrate through microbial activity, can lead to losses of fertilizer nitrogen by leaching and denitrification. In addition, nitrous oxide, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, is a by-product of denitrification. Certain plants can suppress soil nitrification by releasing inhibitors in root exudates, a phenomenon termed biological nitrification inhibition (BNI). The main objective of this BNI research is to identify contrasting rice genotypes and then to dissect genetic components (genes) associated with BNI.</p>
